Yesterday American actress Brittany Murphy was rushed to hospital after having been found collapsed in the shower - medics pronounced her dead on arrival.

American Actress Brittany Murphy - known for such films as 8 Mile and Just Married - has died after suffering from what medics believe to have been a heart attack. She was 32 years old.

Brittany Murphy Pronounced Dead on Arrival at Hospital

Murphy was found collapsed at the Beverly Hills home which she shared with her husband British screenwriter Simon Monjack early last Sunday (20 December 2009).

LA entertainment website TMZ was the first to break the news that Murphy's husband had made an emergency call to the Los Angeles City Fire Department at around 8am.

When the paramedics arrived they determined Murphy to be in full cardiac arrest and attempted to resuscitate her. Murphy was then rushed to nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her time of death is listed as 10.04 am.

The exact cause of the actress' death is yet to be determined. However, the Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Brittany Murphy's Family Express Sorrow

Murphy's family has released the following statement to the press: "The sudden loss of our beloved Brittany is a terrible tragedy. She was our daughter, our wife, our love and a shining star. We ask you to respect our privacy at this time."

Murphy starred in such popular films as 8 Mile, Just Married, Sin City and Uptown Girls. She also provided the voice to the character Luanna Platter on the animated tv show King of the Hill.

Celebrity Tributes on Twitter for Brittany Murphy

Tributes to the American actress poured in on Twitter which included messages from such high-profile friends as Lindsay Lohan and former boyfriend Ashton Kutcher.

Ashton Kutcher: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon."

Lindsay Lohan: "My deepest condolence go out to all of Brittany Murphy's loved ones& may she rest in peace....She was a great talent w/a beautiful soul xo"

Jessica Simpson: "Brittany Murphy was an incredibly ray of Light to so many people. Her smile was contagious. My prayers are with her family and loved ones."
